“Old Bill” Honorarium

Legend of Old Bill

The Barton Community College Foundation is proud to honor and celebrate individuals who exemplify extraordinary support and service to Barton Community College, its students, and the communities we serve. At the heart of this tradition is the “Old Bill” Honorarium - a unique and meaningful way to recognize our most loyal supporters while raising crucial scholarship funds.

So, who is Old Bill? Well, he’s more than just a name; he’s a piece of Barton history with a story as rich as the support he symbolizes. It all began in 1981 when the Claflin Fire Department donated a stuffed buffalo head to the Foundation. Dubbed "Old Bill," this curious and quirky item became the centerpiece of that year’s Big Benefit Auction. After being sold, Old Bill was generously donated back to the Foundation, allowing him to return to the auction the following year.

This delightful cycle of bidding, donating, and fundraising carried on for over two decades, making Old Bill a beloved symbol of community spirit and generosity. In 2002, Old Bill the buffalo retired from his annual fundraising duties, but his legacy lived on. The Foundation transformed this tradition into the Old Bill Honorarium, a way to honor donors and friends who go above and beyond in their support of Barton’s mission.

Each year, the Foundation Board of Directors carefully selects a deserving honoree for this prestigious recognition. During the Big Benefit Auction, attendees have the opportunity to “bid” to donate in honor of the recipient, with every dollar raised going directly to scholarships awarded in their name the following year.

Old Bill may now enjoy a quiet retirement in the Fine Arts Building, but his presence continues to inspire. His display proudly showcases the names of those honored through the Old Bill Honorarium - a testament to the generosity and dedication of Barton’s greatest supporters.
